How This Works

This calculator solves a simple equation backwards. If you know three things, we can find the fourth: your current grade in the class (before the final), your desired grade, and the weight of your final.

From those three numbers, we calculate the minimum score you need on the final exam to hit your target.

The Formula

Required final score = (Desired grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight

You don't need to memorize that. Just plug in your numbers above.

A Real Example

Say your current grade is 82%, you want a B (83%), and the final is worth 30% of your grade.

InputValue
Current grade82%
Desired grade83%
Final weight30%
Required score85.3%

You'd need an 85.3% on the final to pull your grade up to a B. Totally doable.

What If the Number Is Over 100%?

If the calculator says you need a 115% on your final, the math doesn't work — you can't reach your target grade even with a perfect score. That's not the end of the world. It means you should adjust your target to something achievable, check for extra credit, or talk to your professor. A grade you can actually hit is always a better goal than a number that stresses you out.

How Much Is My Final Usually Worth?

Course TypeTypical Final Weight
Lecture courses20–30%
Lab sciences15–25%
Seminars10–20%
Math courses25–35%
Cumulative finals25–40%

Check your syllabus. If it says "Final Exam: 25%", that's the number you enter as the final weight.

Current Grade vs. Weighted Grade

Your "current grade" should be your grade before the final, calculated with proper weighting. If your class uses weighted categories — and most do — make sure you're entering the weighted average, not just a simple average of your scores. Not sure what your current weighted grade is? Use our Grade Calculator first, then come back here with that number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter three things: your current grade in the class (as a percentage), the grade you want to end up with, and how much your final exam is worth. The calculator does the rest.

Your syllabus. Look for "Final Exam" in the grading breakdown. It's usually listed as a percentage — something like "Final Exam: 25%." That's the number you enter.

That means you can't reach your target grade through the final alone, even with a perfect score. Lower your target to something achievable, check if your professor offers extra credit, or talk to your professor directly about your situation.

No. Your current grade should be your overall weighted grade in the class before the final. If your class has homework (20%), midterms (30%), and a project (15%), your current grade is the weighted average of all of those. Not sure what that is? Use our Grade Calculator first, then come back.

Yes. It works for any exam that's a weighted portion of your final grade. Just enter the weight of the exam you're about to take instead of the final.

Absolutely. It doesn't matter what format the final takes. If it has a weight in your syllabus (like "Final Paper: 20%"), this calculator works the same way.

The math is exact. The accuracy of your result depends on the accuracy of what you enter. If your current grade and final weight are correct, the required score will be correct. The most common source of error is entering an unweighted average as your "current grade" when your class uses weighted categories.
